What's Actually in the District

Within a very compact area, Rosemont holds:

• The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center — 840,000 square feet of exhibition space on one level, the second-largest convention facility in the Chicago area after McCormick Place, hosting shows like Fan Expo Chicago, Anime Central, and the International Gem & Jewelry Show
• Allstate Arena — a large concert and sports venue a couple of miles away
• The Rosemont Theatre — a mid-size performance venue
• Fashion Outlets of Chicago — a major outlet shopping center
• Parkway Bank Park — a 200,000-square-foot dining and entertainment complex
• A dense cluster of hotels, several connected directly to the convention center by skybridge

All of it within about a mile of O'Hare's terminals.

Why a One-Mile Trip Still Needs Planning

You'd think a one-mile trip wouldn't require much thought. Two things complicate it:

First, everything happens at once. Because the district sits directly next to O'Hare, event traffic and airport traffic share the same roads — River Road, Mannheim Road, and the I-190/I-294 approaches. A convention letting out during an evening flight bank means both crowds hit the same intersections simultaneously.

Second, the venues are close together but not interchangeable. "Rosemont" isn't a specific enough destination. The convention center at 5555 N. River Road, Allstate Arena, the Rosemont Theatre, and the various hotels all have separate entrances and drop-off points. Specify the venue and entrance when you book.

The upside of the short distance: even with local congestion, the trip itself rarely takes long. It's finding the right door that takes time if you haven't planned it.

Convention Travel at Stephens

A few things specific to conventions here:

• Many hotels connect directly to the convention center, some by enclosed skybridge — worth knowing when you choose lodging, since it can mean skipping ground transportation between hotel and show floor entirely.
• The convention center's parking garage holds about 8,000 cars and connects by walkway, so driving is genuinely viable if you're local. For fly-in attendees, the short airport trip usually beats renting a car you won't otherwise use.
• Attendees arrive heavily by air, given the O'Hare proximity — which means arrival-day and departure-day demand concentrates sharply around flight banks.
• Book ahead for the show's opening and closing days specifically, which are the two days everyone travels.

Arena and Theatre Event Nights

Concert and sports nights at Allstate Arena or the Rosemont Theatre create a different pattern than conventions:

• The surge is concentrated and brief — a few thousand people leaving within about thirty minutes of an event ending, all requesting rides at once. Rideshare pricing spikes hard in that window.
• If you're heading to a flight right after an event, build in extra time for getting out of the immediate venue area, separate from the drive itself.
• Pre-booking matters more here than almost anywhere, precisely because the demand spike is so predictable and so short.
