Midway sits about 11 miles from McCormick Place versus roughly 18 miles for O'Hare, so Midway wins on raw distance. In practice the gap is smaller than it looks:

• O'Hare has far more flight options, especially international and legacy-carrier routes. If your show draws a national or international crowd, your flight probably lands at O'Hare regardless of which airport is technically closer.
• Midway's shorter trip helps most on arrival day, when you're likely landing alongside thousands of other attendees and want to get to registration or your hotel quickly.
• Traffic matters more than mileage here. Both routes pass through areas that slow considerably during weekday rush hour, and the Lake Shore Drive corridor near McCormick Place has its own patterns during large events.

If your flight options allow flexibility, check both. If they don't, the difference isn't large enough to justify a worse flight.

Four Buildings, Not One Entrance

This is the detail most first-time visitors get wrong. McCormick Place isn't a single building — it's four interconnected facilities: the North Building, South Building, West Building, and Lakeside Center. A show can occupy one, two, or all of them, and the walk between the far ends is genuinely long.

When you book a ride, specify which building your event is in, not just "McCormick Place." Your registration confirmation or the show's website will tell you. Being dropped at the correct entrance can save you fifteen minutes of walking with luggage — which matters a lot more on arrival day than it sounds.

Why Show Dates Change Everything

McCormick Place's biggest shows bring tens of thousands of people into the same few square blocks on the same days. The practical effects:

• Arrival and departure days cluster hard. Most attendees fly in the day before a show opens and out the afternoon it closes, which means both airports see concentrated demand at predictable times.
• Rideshare pricing spikes on those days, particularly in the hours right after a show floor closes, when thousands of people request rides simultaneously.
• Hotel shuttles fill up during peak arrival windows, and shared shuttles make multiple stops before reaching yours.
• Book earlier than you would for a normal business trip. A pre-booked flat rate isn't affected by show-day demand, but vehicle availability across the whole city does tighten during major conventions.

If you know your show dates months in advance — and most convention attendees do — book your ground transportation at the same time you book your flight and hotel.

If You're an Exhibitor Rather Than an Attendee

Exhibitor travel has a different shape than attendee travel:

• You arrive earlier and leave later. Setup and teardown days fall outside the show's public dates, which actually works in your favor — less competition for rides.
• You may be traveling with materials, not just luggage. If you're bringing product samples, display materials, or equipment, request a larger vehicle when you book rather than hoping a sedan trunk works out.
• Multiple trips between hotel and venue are common across a multi-day show. If you're making the same trip daily, mention that to dispatch — a standing arrangement is simpler than rebooking each morning.

Group and Team Travel

If your company is sending several people to the same show:

• Coordinate arrivals before booking. A team landing within an hour of each other is often better served by one larger vehicle than several separate rides.
• List every passenger's flight when you book so timing can be planned around the actual arrival spread, not a guess.
• Corporate billing is worth setting up in advance if your organization sends people to Chicago shows regularly, rather than having each traveler expense rides individually.
