What Happens Between Landing and the Curb

The sequence at Terminal 5 is fairly standard, but it takes longer than most first-time visitors expect:

1. Immigration and passport control — processing time varies enormously depending on how many international flights land in the same window. It can be quick, or it can take well over an hour during a busy arrival bank.
2. Baggage claim — collect checked bags after clearing immigration.
3. Customs — you'll pass through customs with your bags before entering the public arrivals area.
4. Arrivals hall — only at this point are you actually reachable and ready to be picked up.

The practical implication: your flight's landing time and your "ready for pickup" time can easily be 60 to 90 minutes apart. Any ground transportation arranged around your landing time alone will be waiting a while.

The Phone Problem, and How to Solve It

This is the single most common friction point for international visitors. If you don't have a U.S. phone plan or an international roaming package active, you may not be reachable by call or text the moment you land — which is exactly when a driver needs to reach you.

A few ways around it:

• Book by phone or email before you travel. You don't need a U.S. number or a downloaded app to arrange a ride in advance. Dispatch can confirm everything by email while you're still in your home country.
• Provide a local contact's number if you have one — a colleague, a host, a family member — as a secondary way to reach you if your own phone isn't working yet.
• O'Hare has free airport-wide WiFi with no time limit, so once you land, messaging apps and email will generally work even if your cellular service doesn't.
• Tell dispatch in advance that you won't have a working phone number on arrival, so the plan accounts for it rather than assuming you'll answer a text.

Where Ground Transportation Actually Picks Up

For pre-arranged car service, the pickup point at Terminal 5 is Vestibule 5D or 5E on the lower level, after you clear customs. This differs from Terminals 1, 2, and 3, where pre-arranged pickups use the lower-level middle lane marked "Car Services/TNP."

Don't leave Terminal 5 looking for a different building — if your ride is arranged, your driver will meet you at the correct vestibule. Signage in the terminal points toward ground transportation, and you'll receive driver and vehicle details by text or email.

If You're Connecting to a Domestic Flight

• You must clear customs and immigration at Terminal 5 even if you're continuing onward — international arrivals always enter the country at the first U.S. airport they land in.
• You'll recheck your bags after customs, then take the free Airport Transit System (ATS) train to your departure terminal.
• You'll go through TSA security again at the departure terminal.
• General guidance for an international-to-domestic connection at a hub like O'Hare is roughly 150 minutes, and that's not padding — it's realistic for the sequence above during a busy period.

Payment, Tipping, and Practical Details

• Tipping is customary in the U.S. for transportation services, generally in line with typical service-industry norms. It's not included in a quoted fare unless stated.
• Payment methods vary by provider. Ours include cash, card, Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App — confirm your preferred method with dispatch when you book, particularly if you're carrying foreign currency and haven't exchanged it yet.
• Currency exchange is available at O'Hare, though rates at airport exchanges are typically less favorable than a bank or ATM withdrawal.
