How to Get From Schaumburg to O'Hare: Every Option Compared

9 min read · Schaumburg Travel Guide · Updated October 2026 · O'Hare Chicago Taxi Cab

Schaumburg is one of the closest major suburbs to O'Hare, but getting there isn't as simple as it looks. There's no direct train, the bus requires a transfer, and the IL-390 shortcut many people expect doesn't reach the terminals yet. If you already know you want a door-to-door ride, you can book a Schaumburg to O'Hare taxi and skip ahead.

This guide covers every realistic option, who each one works best for, and how early to leave.

Quick Comparison

Option Transfers Best For
Pre-booked car service None Early flights, families, luggage and business travel
Uber or Lyft None Flexible midday trips with light luggage
Drive and park None Short trips where parking costs less than two rides
Pace bus and CTA Blue Line 1 Budget solo travelers near Woodfield
Metra 2+ Generally not practical for reaching O'Hare

Option 1: Pace Bus and CTA Blue Line

This is the most practical public-transit route from Schaumburg to O'Hare, and many residents don't know it exists.

Pace Route 606 (Rosemont–Schaumburg Limited) runs daily between Woodfield Corporate Center and the Rosemont CTA station, serving Woodfield Mall and the Pace Northwest Transportation Center. At Rosemont, transfer to the CTA Blue Line and ride one stop to O'Hare. Pace Route 600 also provides express service between the Northwest Transportation Center and Rosemont during its published operating hours.

Good to Know

  • Pay with a Ventra card, contactless bank card or the Ventra app.
  • Check the Pace Route 606 schedule before leaving. Service is less frequent during some early-morning and late-night periods.
  • Construction and traffic on I-90 can affect bus travel time.
  • The O'Hare Blue Line station connects to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 by walkway. Terminal 5 requires an additional airport connection.

Best for: Solo travelers with a carry-on who are near Woodfield and not traveling on a tight schedule.

Bringing checked bags or flying before 7:00 a.m.? A pre-booked car from Schaumburg to O'Hare avoids the transfer entirely.

Option 2: Metra (Not Recommended)

Schaumburg's Metra station is on the Milwaukee District West line, which runs toward downtown Chicago rather than directly to O'Hare. Reaching the airport would require traveling toward Union Station, transferring to the CTA Blue Line and then riding back toward the airport. That can approach two hours and requires multiple connections. It generally makes sense only when you are already traveling through downtown.

For most airport travelers, a direct ride is substantially simpler. See the Schaumburg to O'Hare fare and booking page.

Option 3: Drive and Park

Driving yourself can work for a short trip, especially when several people are sharing the parking cost. For longer trips, O'Hare parking can add up, and economy facilities may require an airport train or shuttle connection before reaching the terminals.

Compare the facilities in our O'Hare parking guide or review taxi service versus parking at O'Hare.

Option 4: Uber or Lyft

Schaumburg generally has rideshare coverage during business hours because of its offices, hotels and shopping areas. The tradeoffs are important when the trip involves a flight:

  • Prices change with demand. Early mornings, holidays and poor weather can produce higher prices.
  • Availability can be thinner before 5:00 a.m. when fewer drivers may be working in the suburbs.
  • The ride is assigned close to departure. A cancellation can leave less time to arrange another vehicle.

If you prefer to have the fare and vehicle arranged in advance, reserve your ride to O'Hare from Schaumburg. For a broader comparison, read Flat-Rate Taxi vs. Uber to O'Hare.

Option 5: Pre-Booked Car Service

A reserved car picks you up at your home, hotel or office and takes you directly to the appropriate terminal. There are no transfers and no need to search for transportation on the morning of the flight. This is usually the most practical option for early departures, families with car seats, groups and travelers carrying several bags.

The Driving Route and the IL-390 Myth

The standard driving route from Schaumburg is I-90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) east to I-190 into the airport.

You may hear that IL-390, formerly known as the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, provides a faster direct entrance. It does not yet connect drivers directly to the terminals. The new I-490/IL-390 interchange is intended to provide western access into and out of O'Hare, and the Illinois Tollway currently schedules that interchange for completion by the end of 2027. Until that connection opens, I-90 to I-190 remains the principal airport route from Schaumburg.

How Early Should You Leave Schaumburg?

Plan to arrive at O'Hare about two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight, then add driving time and a traffic buffer. Confirm the final recommendation with your airline.

Your Flight Arrive at O'Hare By Leave Schaumburg Around

8:00 a.m. domestic 6:00 a.m. 5:00 a.m.
1:00 p.m. domestic 11:00 a.m. 10:15 a.m.

Add 20–30 minutes during snow or ice and additional time during busy holiday weekends or major events near the Schaumburg Convention Center.

O'Hare or Midway From Schaumburg?

O'Hare is substantially closer and is usually the easier ground trip from Schaumburg. Midway requires a longer drive with greater exposure to expressway traffic, but it can still be worthwhile when it offers a better nonstop flight, schedule or airfare, particularly for Southwest passengers.

If Midway has the better flight, review Schaumburg to Midway taxi service. For a broader comparison, read O'Hare vs. Midway: Which Airport?

Tips for Woodfield-Area Hotel Guests

  • Ask your hotel whether it offers airport transportation, which airports it serves and how frequently it operates.
  • The Pace Northwest Transportation Center is accessible from parts of the Woodfield area when public transit fits your schedule.
  • Conventions and major events can increase local transportation demand, so consider arranging an early-morning ride in advance.
